Benefits of Virtual Queuing at Congested Airports Using ASDE-X: A Case Study of JFK Airport
نویسندگان
چکیده
ASDE-X is a runway safety system that fuses data from multiple sources to provide enhanced air traffic control situational awareness. These data may also be used to manage arrival and departure delay at congested airports. This paper demonstrates the potential for delay management by using departure data recorded by the ASDE-X system at JFK Airport before runway reconstruction in 2010 began. The paper lays out concepts, data, metrics, and a framework to estimate benefits from virtual queuing, a departure management system that allows the aircraft to maintain their rolling spots in the queue without physically joining the queue. While virtual queuing is relatively more common in Europe, its use in the US is limited. This analysis demonstrates that there may be significant benefit, even with most conservative assumptions, of using virtual queuing for departure management at congested airports. Environmental benefits of virtual queuing at JFK Airport are significant.

A Queuing Model of Airport Congestion and Policy Implications at JFK and EWR
Since the phasing-out of the High Density Rule, access to major commercial airports in the United States has been unconstrained or, in the case of the airports of New York, weakly constrained. This largely unregulated demand combined with capacity constraints led to record delay levels in 2007, whose costs were estimated as in excess of $30 billion a year. Mitigating airport congestion may be a...

This paper presents our ongoing research on an auction model a hybrid demand management approach for congested airports. It is intended to optimize the utilization of airport time slots by maximizing passenger throughput within safe capacity, decreasing congestion and delay. The two sub-models mathematically formulate conflicting optimization problems of efficiency-driven airport regulators and...

متن کاملModelling Delay Propagation within an Airport Network
This paper is concerned with the propagation of delays within a large network of major airports. As more airports in the United States and in Europe become more congested, it also becomes increasingly likely that delays at one or more airports will spread to other parts of the network. We describe an analytical queuing and network decomposition model developed to study this complex phenomenon. ...
متن کاملMetrics to Characterize Airport Operational Performance Using Surface Surveillance Data
Detailed surface surveillance datasets from sources such as the Airport Surface Detection Equipment, Model-X (ASDE-X) have the potential to be used for the analysis of airport operations, in addition to their primary purpose of enhancing safety. This paper describes how surface surveillance data can be used to measure airport performance characteristics in three different ways: (1) Characteriza...
